An independent quarterly publication
The Raw Magazine
Background
CONTEXT & MY ROLE
In the last decade, stacks of new erotic independent magazines have been finding their way to bedside tables, with the purpose of inspiring curiosity and exploration. The Raw Magazine is setting out to subvert sexual stereotypes, whether by challenging censorships; creating space for queer, non-conforming, and female expression; providing readers with honest and relatable depictions of sexuality.
I led the full creation of The Raw — from sourcing and curating content to designing the magazine layout, establishing the visual identity, and overseeing the printing and production process independently.
GOALS
The Raw Magazine was created to curate a collection of thought-provoking articles and striking photography that highlight artists who challenge societal norms and push creative boundaries. At a time when conversations around identity and sexuality are gaining momentum, The Raw celebrates this powerful shift by providing a platform for open expression. The magazine encourages dialogue, fosters a sense of empowerment, and creates space for diverse, authentic voices to be seen and heard.
The Raw Magazine explores the intersection of identity and self-expression. It celebrates the power of art through design, editorial layout, and art direction.
Reader Personas
Typography
Headline: Granville and Orpheus are high-contrast typefaces characterized by dramatic shifts between thick and thin strokes. Popular in mid-20th-century signage and posters, they bring a sense of elegance, versatility, and modernity.
Body: Proxima Nova blends the geometric structure of Futura with the humanist qualities of Akzidenz Grotesk, combining a modern appearance with excellent readability. Its tall x-height and low-contrast strokes make it highly legible, even at smaller sizes.
Style & Source of Content
I drew inspiration from publications such as Ladybeard, Riposte, and Math by using bold typography, impactful imagery, and thoughtful negative space.
The first issue centers on photography and photographers who explore freedom of self-expression and the raw instinct of human nature. The featured photographers are: Joanne Leah, The Ljilja, Guy Bourdin, Pretty Puke, Ren Hang, and Jo Ann Callis.
Selected Spreads of the First Issue
The magazine is divided into three sections: Front of the Book features short interviews with artists, Features presents longer stories highlighting how artists explore themes of sexuality, fluidity, and self-expression, and Back of the Book offers brief articles on trends, news, and resources for readers seeking community support and allyship.
